Altered States: One of my favorite movies. It is also the one I find the most difficult to watch. Although the replay value is quite low, at least in my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful and ridiculous rides in cinema you can take. I want my own isolation chamber now…
Channel Update
Justin.tv/civic_television is the third (maybe fourth) incarnation of our pirate channel. It went on the “air” today for approximately 6 hours. It was a successful test stream. We ran it at a steady 600kbs with surprisingly minimal drops.
What we are doing now:
- Scouring the internet for more unique videos
- Organizing a schedule
- Building a back-up mini-server
Soon we will be on 24/7. Soon we will have Channel 83!
Carl Sagan’s Cosmos is beautiful. It is as relevant as when it was originally released. Personally, I love crazy shit, and I especially love crazy shit that is real. Carl Sagan explains the universe in his documentary series from 1980. Just listen to his voice.
We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.
We’ve been banned…twice.
I think this is a sign we are going to have to go with our second alternative and just play obscure things. This means that I’m going to have to scour the city’s rare and eclectic section and just rip all-day and all-night.
A very entertaining and beautiful documentary about the Great Doctor will be added to the channel.
Give us Channel 83…
If you are confused as to how the “station” will be run, then here it is: Its going to be programmed, just like any other station. Since we don’t have the luxury of having commercials and filler for correct time placements or have automated initiations, we’re just going to do a simple cycle.
The programing can be found here, in an easy to use .pdf file. Keep this in mind: I am actively updating our databases with new shows and video, so this will be an ever changing list. Another reminder is that full “take-off” will not be until mid-June, so this is just a taste.

Meet, Power Walrus. Our first contributor. Currently we will be adding his gem, “Winston Churchili” to our line-up, so look for it when the channel is online. Visit him on his YouTube channel for more. If I were British, I’d say he were a “witty and delightful chap.”
“…what now? What comes next?” - Dr. Thompson
We here at CIVIC TV are currently working on programming and media accumulation. Already equipped with roughly 4 lovely and humble tera-bytes of television and film, we hope to offer some sort of daily programming. Instead of leaving a playlist on random 24/7, we actually hope to accomplish what a real television station would: consistency.
It is not that we are trying to just make another bland television station, but an actual feed/channel that is enjoyable (at least to us). I plan to reveal the line-up on June 18th, 2010 and hopefully we will go past out “beta” mode to a full run with only moderate “offline” sessions to do random maintenance or update the feed.
So what do we have planned, “what comes next?” Currently it is going to be a mixture of media we find on creative commons (and that is actually worthy of showing). Along with this are going to be a hopefully growing list of “contributors,” which will be other patrons of the internet who share a same vision of beautifully absurd crap. Finally, we will try to show as many awesome things as we can for as long as we can. This can include, but not limited to, cartoons, movies, music videos, and other treasures we come across.
